As travel picks up again after two years of a pandemic, hotels are doing their part to bring in tourists, with unique programming, curated storytelling and personalized experiences that prioritize health and safety as much as a good time.

Nowhere is that better represented than in a new partnership between beloved Santa Monica hotel, Shutters on the Beach, and the air purifier brand, Molekule. Shutters is teaming up with Molekule to have the brand’s popular air purifiers installed in its hotel rooms, to give guests a way to monitor and improve their indoor air quality.

Shutters — and neighboring hotel Casa Del Mar — have Molekule’s Air Pro and Air Mini+ purifiers available for guests to use. Both air purifiers are FDA-cleared for use and feature PECO (Photoelectrochemical oxidation) technology to trap and remove particles as small as 0.1 nm (think germs and pet dander).

In addition to helping reduce dust, bacteria and allergens, Molekule says its line of air purifiers can also destroy SARs-COV-2, the virus that causes Covid, letting you — literally — breathe a little easier.

Effective in both private rooms and public spaces, Molekule’s air purifiers also help to remove pollutants commonly found in hotels from cleaning chemicals and lack of ventilation in older buildings.

Molekule’s line of air purifiers aren’t new — the brand launched its first device in 2017 — but the company says it’s had to pivot in the last few years to meet the needs of businesses and consumers alike.

“With people spending more time indoors than ever before, there is a heightened awareness about the everyday air we breathe,” Jonathan Harris, CEO of Molekule, tells Rolling Stone. “Air quality is estimated to be 2-5x more polluted than outside air, so it was important to our consumers to have a line of defense during Covid-related lockdowns and reopening policies, or natural disaster events like wildfires and smoke.”

In addition to Shutters and Casa del Mar, Molekule air purifiers are currently available at the InterContinental Hotel in San Francisco, and boutique properties like the Scribner’s Catskill Lodge in Hunter, N.Y., Ocean House in Rhode Island and The Mauna Kea in Hawaii. Molekule purifiers are installed at large venues too, with the brand named the “Official Air Purification Partner” of Madison Square Garden in 2019.

Harris says it was a no-brainer to work with hotels, to ensure a safe and comfortable stay with guests. “Hotels have come to us with guest concerns regarding room turnover rates with other guests, chemical cleaning usage in rooms, air quality as it relates to guests’ sleep experiences, and more,” he explains. “We see clean air as an amenity that’s just as important as traditional surface cleaning, since harmful pollutants and VOCs can linger in the air. We saw the need for clean indoor air solutions beyond just the home.”

Clean air as a hotel amenity? Sounds about right for 2022. Still, most hotels aren’t installing just any commercial air purifier in their rooms — Shutters says they chose Molekule’s air purifiers for their sleek, streamlined looks and the way they blend easily into the existing hotel decor. Harris (obviously) concurs.

“Molekule air purifiers are beautiful pieces of art that are meant to be seen in your home or business,” he says, nothing that the units look great whether in bedrooms, boardrooms or the spa.

“Covid and the challenges of remote work certainly changed the way we do things,” Harris says, “but we’re inspired to enable people to learn more about what’s in their air and give give customers a clear picture of their air quality.”
