Major League Soccer may still feel like a young league, but at nearly 30 years since the first match was played, there’s a lot to look back on. From the early days when there were just 10 teams to Messi in Miami, the MLS has come a long way.
Adidas, which is as synonymous with soccer as a pub is to a pint, is releasing a collection of throwback jerseys from 10 MLS teams, including the Seattle Sounders, Columbus Crew, and more. The retro jerseys feature 1990s and 2000s era logos, minus the vintage markup. The collection also includes archive-inspired Gazelle sneakers.

In many ways, the vibrant, retro kits are a throwback to a more colorful time in the league, and not just visually. Early clubs had offbeat names — there was the Kansas City Wiz, Dallas Burn, and Minnesota Loons, which have all since rebranded.
Then there were the infamous penalty shootouts, which were borrowed from the North American Soccer League and were a variation on traditional penalty kicks. In a draw, the attacker would start 35 yards back and get five seconds to score, with the goalie often charging to block — it was the kind of futbol meets football style of play that made the early MLS rowdy and distinctly American.

The Adidas MLS Archive features jerseys from 10 teams and will be available from July 16 to September 15, or until they sell out. Jerseys include the New England Revolution, Colorado Rapids, San Jose Clash, Columbus Crew, Minnesota Loons, D.C. United, Charlotte FC, Nashville SC, Dallas Burn, and Seattle Sounders.
Adidas has had a long relationship with MLS, dating back to the inaugural 1996 season, and in 2023, the sportswear giant extended its long-term agreement as the sole footwear and apparel partner of the League and its 30 teams.
