Among the snubs and surprises of last week’s Oscars nominations was Nicole Kidman not getting a nod for her performance in Babygirl. The steamy drama, which co-starred Antonio Banderas and Harris Dickinson, centers on a powerful tech executive who starts an affair with a younger intern.

Produced by A24, the film was released on Christmas Day and is now available to rent or buy on VOD platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.

The film does not yet have a Blu-Ray release date, but the VOD version is available in 4K UHD. Babygirl was written and directed by Halina Reijn, who also helmed the horror comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies. Along with films like Queer and Challengers, Babygirl proved that 2024 was the year sex made an onscreen comeback, even if the Oscars weren’t having it. Despite these films racking up nominations and wins at the Golden Globes, none of these films got any Oscar nods.

In the film, Kidman’s Romy, who runs an Amazon-esque tech company, begins a submissive affair with a young intern, played by Harris Dickinson. The film raises thorny questions about power and consent, given the inverted imbalance of power between the pair’s business relationship and their personal one.

Rolling Stone’s David Fear praised Kidman’s performance in particular, writing, “Yet it’s Kidman — and specifically, her willingness to go there in terms of presenting a sexual liaison involving humiliation, shame and ultimately satisfaction — who keeps this drama from devolving into Skinemax-by-numbers.”

In addition to Babygirl, A24 also distributed The Brutalist, Y2K, Heretic, Queer, Sing Sing, and I Saw The TV Glow in 2024. Because of A24’s streaming agreement with HBO and Max, Babygirl will eventually be streaming on Max, which is available as a standalone subscription, Prime add-on, or as part of a bundle with Disney+ and Hulu.
