Adidas is bringing the Nineties back, just in time for the upcoming World Cup.
The sports retailer has dropped a denim-inspired collection of jerseys, T-shirts and sneakers that pay tribute to the Adidas uniforms worn by Team USA at the 1994 World Cup.
The pieces feature a red, white and blue colorway with a washed denim effect that calls to mind the classic bleached and faded denim looks seen in Nineties music videos and malls alike (it’s totally giving Zack Morris in Saved by the Bell). The pieces have also been treated to give it a worn-in look and feel, further adding to the vintage aesthetic. Worth noting: the pieces aren’t actually made from denim, but rather a lightweight, recycled polyester material.
Available online on the Adidas website and at Fanatics.com, the sportswear brand says the pieces evoke “a sense of nostalgia for a pivotal moment in American soccer history.” Of course, the original jerseys were quite controversial when they were first released, with some praising Adidas for referencing a quintessentially “American” fabric, while others criticized the kits for looking like costumes. I still remember my parents audibly asking “What is this?!” when they first saw the jerseys on screen.
Still, the demand for the original jerseys has soared in recent years, as denim (and denim-on-denim) endures as a style staple for young and old alike. So it’s no surprise that the new Adidas drop has driven a ton of fans to snap up the pieces online.
Here’s a look at some of our favorite pieces from the collection, which are as cool on the soccer pitch as they are for street style shots alike.
NEW RELEASE
Adidas USA 1994 Denim Graphic Fashion Jersey
$89.99
$90
This throwback-style top is reminiscent of the classic away jerseys worn by the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) in the 1994 FIFA World Cup, with bold graphic stars, and an embroidered Adidas logo in red. While the jerseys were met with mixed reactions when they debuted on the players in ’94, the denim-on-denim look is almost universally beloved now as a style statement.
MATCHING SET
Adidas Denim Graphic Shorts
$60
You can pair the T-shirt with matching loose fit, drawstring shorts, available for $60 here. We like the bleached denim look of these shorts, which are actually made from a polyester material that’s soft and breathable, making them as ideal for the soccer field as they are for the beach. The shorts are available in sizes XS to 3XL but sizes are selling quickly so we recommend adding to cart while they’re still in stock.
THROWBACK STYLE
Adidas USA 1994 Denim Graphic Full-Zip Track Jacket
$119.99
$120
One of the best pieces in the collection is this zip-up jacket, which features the denim-inspired design with American flag striping along the arms and on the collar. A large USA graphic adorns the back of the jacket, just like the Team USA uniforms worn at the World Cup or Olympics. This track jacket features a loose fit — size up if you want that trendy oversized look.
LIMITED RELEASE
Samba OG Shoes
$110
Adidas’ iconic Samba sneakers get a retro-inspired makeover too as part of the throwback World Cup collection. Unlike the clothing pieces, which use a denim-effect wash, these shoes feature a real denim upper with matching indigo suede. These Samba OG sneakers are finished off with their signature translucent gum cupsole.
“With the U.S. Denim jersey, we set out to capture the side of American soccer that has always been distinctive and original,” says Inigo Turner, design director at Adidas football. “This design leans into that spirit with bold graphics, fearless color and a belief that the game here should look and feel like it belongs to the people.”
The new collection arrives just ahead of the U.S. hosting the World Cup this summer, alongside Mexico and Canada as co-hosts. The U.S. hosted the 1994 World Cup and made it past the group stage before being eliminated by eventual champions Brazil in the knockout round.
Adidas, meantime, were the official designer and supplier of Team USA’s kits for the 1994 soccer tournament, before Nike took it over a year later. While this year’s official USA World Cup jersey has yet to be unveiled, you can shop Nike USMNT apparel and merch here.
